Help Bring Home Economics Back to Detroit Classrooms

This fall, Slow Stitch Detroit is launching Bringing Home Economics Back, a new hands-on fashion and sewing program in two Detroit public schools, in addition to ongoing Youth Fashion Lab afterschool program at Slow Stitch.

Students will learn to sew, mend, design, and think differently about the clothes they wear while building creativity, confidence, practical life skills, and a deeper understanding of caring for people and the planet.

We're inviting our community to help make this possible.

This summer, we're raising $10,000 in matching funds to support the launch of this new school program while strengthening the artists, educators, youth programming, and creative foundation that make this work possible. We’re grateful to Michigan Arts & Culture Council for providing this matching grant opportunity.

With your support, we'll be able to:

  • Launch our pilot program in Detroit public schools this fall.

  • Continue year-round youth programming at Slow Stitch Detroit.

  • Develop a curriculum that can grow to reach more schools in Detroit and beyond.

Every gift, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to giving more young people the opportunity to create with their hands, solve problems creatively, and discover the confidence that comes from making something themselves.

  • We have a fiduciary non-profit partner 501 c3 (Neighborhood Art School). If you need a tax deductible donation option, please do not send funds through Go Fund Me- but instead email sarahjanemarkdesign@gmail.com for donation instructions to donate through Neighborhood Art School.

  • When donating through Go-Fund-Me Slow Stitch is designating these donations for our matching grant fundraiser and funds will go to the Bringing Home Economics back program in schools as well as to help subsidize youth education at Slow Stitch’s Youth Afterschool Fashion Lab.

  • Yes! We welcome volunteers to come help at events and if you have any light sewing skills to help with our youth as well as adult sewing programs. Please email us to learn how to join the Sew Good Volunteer Collective.
