Slow Stitch Receives MACC Grant

We're grateful to share that Slow Stitch Detroit, through our fiscal sponsor Neighborhood Art School, has received support from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

This funding will help strengthen and expand several areas of our work, including artist development, youth arts education, and community programming centered on fashion, creativity, and sustainability.

The grant will support the launch of Bringing Home Economics Back, Reimagined for Today, a fashion-based arts education program that teaches sewing, mending, garment construction, and design while helping students explore self-expression, environmental responsibility, and the social impact of clothing.

Funding will also provide professional development opportunities for our staff and teaching artists through the Sustainable Fashion Academy, as well as support a field trip connecting youth and artists with Michigan leaders in fiber agriculture, natural dyeing, upcycled manufacturing, and sustainable fashion.

In addition, this support helps strengthen the organizational capacity needed to sustain artist residencies, workshops, community events, and educational programs throughout the year.

To help meet the grant's matching funds requirement, we'll be hosting a series of community fundraisers this summer, including a Vintage Fabric Sale and several Slow Stitch Retreat Days. Proceeds will help expand access to arts education and sustainable fashion programming for Detroit youth.

We're honored to receive this support and excited to continue building opportunities for Detroit artists, makers, and young people to learn, create, and thrive.
