4-Week Beginner Sewing Series | Plus-Size Sewing & Fit | Patterns available in US sizes 12–32

Dates: Sundays, 1-4pm: October 4, 11,18, 25, 2026

Using the Magna Pants pattern from Jenny Rushmore's Ahead of the Curve: Learn to Fit and Sew Amazing Clothes for Your Curves, you'll learn foundational sewing and garment construction while gaining something especially valuable: how to understand and adjust the fit of pants for your own unique body.

Rather than expecting your body to conform to a standard size, this class is about learning how to make the pattern work for you.

Class Includes:

  • 4 weekly sessions (Sundays in October, 1-4pm)

  • Learn how to use a sewing machine & sew your own pants!

  • Learn how to read and use a commercial sewing pattern

  • Learn how to take your measurements and select your pattern size

  • Pant construction from cutting through finishing

  • Plus-size fitting and pattern adjustment techniques

  • Support customizing the fit for your waist, hips, thighs and proportions

  • Hands-on guidance from Indigo throughout the process

THE PATTERN + BOOK: The Magna Pants are a comfortable, pull-on pant with an elastic waist and tapered leg, making them a great wardrobe staple and an approachable project for learning garment construction and fit.

The pattern is included in Jenny Rushmore's Ahead of the Curve, available for approximately $22. Even better, the book includes five complete garment patterns in sizes 12–32, so you'll leave class with patterns and fitting knowledge you can continue using at home. While we'll focus specifically on the Magna Pants during this 4-week series, your book will give you plenty more to explore! (At $22 this book is an amazing value that includes 5 patterns! It also gives detailed instructions on how to fit clothes to fit your body to fit/alter clothes you already own. Most patterns cost $15-20 , so this book is a gem!)

You Bring:

We Provide:

  • Sewing machines, tools and supplies

  • Elastic and other notions listed in the book

  • Professional sewing and fitting support

By the end of the series, you'll have a handmade pair of pants fitted to your body and foundational sewing and fitting skills you can continue using on future garments.

Notes on Fabric:

The Magna Pants are designed for woven fabrics, which makes this a great project for beginning sewists. Look for a medium-weight woven fabric with enough structure for pants but enough softness to move comfortably with your body.

Good fabric choices include:

  • Linen or linen blends

  • Cotton twill

  • Stretch twill

  • Lightweight denim

  • Chambray

  • Lightweight to medium-weight corduroy

  • Cotton blends

  • Stable woven fabrics with a small amount of stretch

For your first pair, we would avoid heavy denim or canvas, very stiff fabrics, very stretchy fabrics, rayon/viscose, and very lightweight, silky or slippery fabrics. Some of these can make beautiful pants, but they can be more challenging to cut, fit and sew when you're just learning.

Not sure if your fabric will work? Reach out before purchasing! You can send us a photo or link to the fabric you're considering, and we're happy to help determine whether it's a good choice for class.

Notes on Sizing: The patterns in Ahead of the Curve are designed specifically for plus-size bodies and are available in US sizes 12–32. Sewing pattern sizing can be different from standard store sizing, so please don't choose your pattern size based solely on the size you normally buy. Use your actual body measurements and the book's sizing chart to determine your starting size.

Need help measuring yourself? There are helpful videos on YouTube demonstrating how to properly take measurements for sewing. We recommend starting there—search “how to properly measure myself for a sewing pattern.”

If you still need help, reach out to us! We're happy to help take your measurements and determine the best starting size for you.

AND THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING! Slow Stitch plans to continue hosting a Plus Size Clothing Studio throughout the year, creating an ongoing space to learn how to sew, fit and customize clothing for your body.

And we want participants to help shape what comes next! After the Magna Pants, the group can help determine what we make in future sessions—whether that's a top, dress, jacket or another garment you're excited to learn.

Come for the pants, build your skills, and help us grow a plus-size sewing community at Slow Stitch.
